Anwar Ibrahim and Joko Widodo to Discuss Bilateral Cooperation and Global Challenges during State Visit

- The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, will meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo during a state visit to Indonesia on January 8th-9th, 2023. 

The Malaysian Foreign Minister, Zambry Abdul Kadir, the Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia, Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and several officials from relevant ministries and agencies will accompany the Prime Minister on his visit.

According to a written statement from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Putrajaya, on Saturday (1/7/2023), the Malaysian Prime Minister is scheduled to have a one-on-one meeting with President Jokowi. 

The two heads of state/government will review the progress of bilateral cooperation, explore potential for new partnerships, and promote joint efforts to address regional and global challenges during their meeting at the Bogor Palace.

Several important issues will also be discussed during the meeting, including economic cooperation, including Malaysia's potential investment in the Indonesian Capital City (IKN), land and sea demarcation, and employment and protection of Indonesian migrant workers. 

The leaders will also exchange views on a number of regional and global issues, particularly concerning the situation in Myanmar and joint efforts to address discrimination against palm oil, where Malaysia and Indonesia are the largest exporters in the world.

Anwar Ibrahim and Jokowi will also witness the handover of 11 Letters of Interest (Lol) from Malaysian companies to participate in the development of the IKN by the Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia to the Head of the IKN Authority, Bambang Susantono. In addition, a total of eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) between Malaysian and Indonesian private sectors worth approximately MYR 1.16 billion (IDR 4.11 trillion) are expected to be signed during the visit.

Anwar Ibrahim is also scheduled to give a public lecture on "The Strategic Relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia" and attend a meeting with the Malaysian diaspora in Jakarta.

In 2021, Indonesia was the 7th largest global trading partner for Malaysia and the 3rd largest in ASEAN, with a trade value of MYR 95.31 billion (IDR 337.806 trillion). For the period January-November 2022, Indonesia was the 6th largest global trading partner for Malaysia and the 2nd largest in ASEAN, with total trade increasing by 41.7% worth MYR 120.26 billion (IDR 427.442 trillion).
